All
A few weeks ago our chair Ken G asked in a private email if I
would chair a subcommittee to see whether a balanced budget without
being dependent on the Annual Convention proceeds was possible. I
know a number of former and current BOT members have indicated their
desire to have that happen. As a BOT member for the last 4 or so
years, who actually made the connection that we NEED $5K per year
from the convention to float the ACA boat, I really am a skeptic that
this can be done. But I am willing to be proven wrong, and hope we
can... eventually

As always, BB is the major expense. My feeling is that we can
become convention independent only if 1. we find a cheaper printer,
2. we increase our membership base so the cost per BB issue is
lessened, 3. we dump our life members (ulp, that's me), or ulp, 4. we
increase dues which are already taxing our members or 5. we go to
all webbased pubs, which of course is not feasible unless all the
membership have internet access

I think looking for alternate printer is a bad way to go: BB
is up and working and we shouldn't sacrifice Eric H's proximity to
printer to save a few cents on every issue. Perhaps get other quote
and maybe see what that does to our existing printer's bills, but I
wouldn't suggest seriously contemplating a move to another printer
until such time as there is another Managing Editor, which I
sincerely hope doesn't happen anytime soon. I personally think BB is
working well and looking good and still remains the lifeblood of ACA,
but I am biased.

So, in a nutshell, I am skeptical that we can do it, that is,
become convention revenue independent at this time, or anytime soon.
Given that skepticism, I'd like some one else or several others on
the BOT to step forward who has a passion around this issue and the
time and energy to devote to seeing how we can cut costs or increase
revenue

In short, it ain't me, I will probably be arguing from the other side.

Thanks Tim for providing a good starting point, along with our budge
from 2003 Cincy convention.
