My printer can do true 2400x1200 dpi and can use HP's PhotoREt mode which automatically chooses a balance betwen speed and resolution based on each picture and varies the dot size and does other mysterious things to produce something worth a 1,000 words, give or a take a few hundred. I've asked the printer many times what dpi it's using but it just chugs and whirrs and clicks and won't say a word in response.
