Re: [AGA SC] RE: [Fwd: Re: Re: Info on the advertisement]] (fwd)

I am, of course, strongly opposed to banner ads on the AGA website for
several reasons:

  1) They're icky icky icky. Man, I hate banner ads. They're just icky.

  2) How much revenue would we realistically get from banner ads? I'll
bet it's a lot less than we're getting from the TAG ads. Otherwise, why
wouldn't people just advertise in TAG? Banner ads are freaking cheap.
[Note: author has no idea if banner ads are actually freaking cheap.
Above statement is pure speculation.]

  3) How many people would we need to sign up for banner ads for this to
be effective? Probably a lot more. And we're not going to have those
people on a 1-year contract.... can we say "maintenance nightmare?"

[Side digression regarding above point. I probably mentioned this
already, but over in ACA land they have recently ramrodded legislation
down my throat enabling "micro ads" of $50 for 1/8 page in the hopes of
boosting ad revenue. I noted that for me it's worth more than $50 of my
time to set up one of these ads (considering the e-mail back & forth to
the advertiser, format conversions, and final layout), and setting up one
of these ads to run only once would be insulting to me as a volunteer
worker. We ended up compromising, and requiring that they run the
micro-ad a minimum of six issues. This did not, however, stop the first
advertiser from trying to run six different ads. Grr. Anyway, point
being, we're all professionals, and our time is worth more than to spend
several couple hours chasing a single $50 web banner ad.]

  4) This is a moot point given #2 and 3 above, but ethically I don't
think it's appropriate for ads on the website to support the magazine.
This is along the same lines of thought as the discussion we had a few
months back about using the convention to support TAG... The fact that
magazine ads currently support the magazine is great parity/balance. If
we were to need some way to supplement the website, banner ads might be
appropriate. But given that the website is only about $200-300 per year,
it's a drop in the bucket for the AGA's budget.

  5) Banner ads as a whole are on the decline at the moment. It's
generally been shown that they are ineffective. [Above statement is also
pure conjecture. Author read that "somewhere" a while ago.]

  6) Have I mentioned how much I hate banner ads? Gawd I hate banner ads.
