Actually, there is a Monterey airport.  I was able to find flights there
from Boston.  Of course, not without a connection, but that is certainly
true of Hartford too.

I guess it's a trade-off.  You pay more for hotels in a big city, or you pay
more for your flight going to a smaller city :-/
