I agree that we should be giving back to the members. I like the idea of finishing the beginner's guide. Another possible "special publication"
I hesitate to call The Basics a "special publication" because then it would obligate us to send a copy to each AGA member per the membership agreement/wording. Tom's article, being more scientific, could be printed much less expensively and that would be fine as a "special publication" mailed to all members.
is that Tom has given me his "estimative index" article.
He originally gave it to me for TAG, but it is ENORMOUS. To print it in TAG, we will have to split it into at LEAST a couple of issues, or devote an entire issue to it. That could make a really nice permanent reference source for our more advanced members.
Karen, I want the opportunity to edit this. Both copyediting and substantive editing. Give me a shot. I'm good at it. Whether we publish separately, or in TAG, or both, I want a crack at it. I'm also practiced at author relations, so I think I can edit him without offending him.
What about, rather than going to a larger TAG (which is hard to back off from, once you start)
Back in the black-and-white days, the way to so a "special" issue of TAG was to put come color panels in it. Now, I think the best way is to do a single, special issue of TAG that is full-sized. We will mark it as a special issue. That doesn't obligate us to continue doing it that size. If folks like it, we can do one every year, or every other year.
focus on some specialty publications that start as
something that current members just get as part of their membership, but then become either incentive items for new members, or TRULY exclusive book store items?
Yes, I think that's grand. The Basics could be the 2006 project; with a little more editing, it's done. Tom's article could be slated for publication as a booklet in 2007. That would give us enough time to make it readable. :-)
