Re: [AGA-sc] Response from KL!

The AGA is very financially viable and could take the $1000+ hit. Bringing
in Dr. Tan would certainly attract some new people. Odds are pretty good
he won't be able to make it anyway, and we'd be going for 2007 anyway (but
we'll never know unless we ask). And this was the one speaker Jim really
thought we should have. *and* it's the last year we're going to leave any
of these decisions to a local club to boot.
I was thinking that we could do this as educational outreach... take that
speaker completely OUT of the convention budget, and treat it as a "booster
shot" for the organization as a whole... Create enthusiasm and good will,
educate people in an area that there are few other experts, etc.
I'm also not sure that he would necessarily be talking about terrestrial
mosses. That may be his main field, but I can't believe he can't relate
that to aquatic mosses. He, more than anyone else, could tell us if he has
enough material to make a talk out of it.
I will defer to you as treasurer on the financial basis, as per the
message to Jim. We'll see if they want both badly enough to try and
balance the budget. My guess is that they'll suggest dropping Dave
Wilson.
That would be a HUGE mistake, and one that I don't think we can allow them
to make. If it's one or the other, it HAS to be Dave. Regardless of their
local interest in mosses, there is only so much you can do with moss. I
just don't think the appeal is strong enough to bring people in from diverse
geographical areas. IMO, without Dave, we have a "big expense" speaker,
without him being a "big draw" speaker.
