We ate $1800 worth of plane tickets to Costa Rica (for our 25th anniversary) when the airline cancelled our flight, and dragged out the settlement process. By the time it was clear that they WOULDN'T refund the money, neither PayPal nor our credit card company would help up. So if you're working with "lttle guy" customers/vendors, or if the amount is small, it seems to work fine.
