I have had the exact same thing happened when my pair spawned.   The
male does all the work and doesn't even tolerate the female anywhere
near the eggs or fry.   I had him kill at least 2 females guarding eggs
and fry until I realized it was him doing all the work and not the
girls.   So I remove the female as soon as spawning is complete.   This
way she lives to spawn another day.
