this sounds possible, some fish have different ph requiremtns, you might be
losing the ones that like alkaline conditions, most tanks tend to go acidic
after a awhile, i've noticed all of mine doing that, especially the ones
with plants.  You might look into keepin gsome cichlids that  thrive in
acidic conditions like apistos, kribs, etc.
