mike, thanks for your explanation.  as usual, it was thorough and clear.  
looking at randy's pic, they looked like classic agassiziis, but the other 2 
photos show that strange patterning more clearly. i now withdraw my proposal 
to impose a quota on the number of mikes in this list... :-)
