Tom, I am jumping in the middle of the thread here, so maybe there have been multiple responses already. In one of my tanks I had many trumpet snails (at least so I thought they were). Indeed my interest was in merely keeping the number reasonable; I wanted some for their beneficial properties. They did seem to munch holes in the leaves of the sword plants when they were too many of them. My method of control was simple. At night after the lights were off, the snails came out and crawled up the front glass. I simply crushed a certain number against the glass. The number seems to have declined more recently by itself anyway. I was also interested that Gabrielle had success breeding A. borrellii in a tank with Clown Loaches. I have a 29 gallon with a pair of shy, yet at times manic, exuberant clown loaches (especially at feeding time). I have considered moving a pair of apistos into the tank to make room to move my pair of A. viejita into a tank where they can breed (i.e., a tank without many corys), but have been reluctant. Alternatively I may move the corys from the viejita's tank into the 29 with the clown loaches. The female viejita (in a 20 gallon tank) had been bright yellow and occupying a cave for a few weeks (though her color has just dulled again), but no fry developed. I assume the corys in the tank or the couple of SAE's got the eggs. -Dan ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the apistogramma mailing list, apisto@listbox.com.
