Public aquariums usually overdose the fish with MS 222 or use CO2 as a
means of euthanasia. Striking at them or with them will sometimes take
several blows, if not done well the first time. Freezing works, but I
imagine is painful until the body numbs. MS 222 is hard to come by for the
home aquarist, but C02 might be an alternative. It is CO2 that many Zoos
use on intended food items, they can't use chemicals due to ingestion
problems with the consummers.
