Evolution and the continuation of the species.

The fish that eat their babies see no reason to allow them to grow up
and compete with their limited food resources.  And their limited space
resources as well.

If the fishes territory extends beyond the boundaries of the water it is
placed in then there is no need for further competition for the
resources.

Wherein if the water extends past the territorial limit then why not go
forth and multiply.

Obviously they can't stop them selves from multiplying but they can stop
them selves from depleting their limited resources,

It think this is the answer to the question.

The solution, get an amazon river trib in your back yard or get a 1200
gallon aquarium.

Take your pick.
