You're right : muriatic acid is the old name for hydrochloric acid.
It's a strong acid and Forsberg in" The great book about Cichlids" from Konings
recmmend the use of H3PO4 a weak acid; and in my opinion that is safer for you ,
your clothes and eyes.

PS Be careful : it's dangerous to put water in acid, you have to put acid in
water
