Nope.  The Fluval pellets are made of sphagnum.  The processing somehow 
"activates" the tannins, loosening the stuff to allow it to work.  Also, if 
you find a way to move the water through the "fluffy stuff", like putting it 
in a box filter or a canister, it will work better.  I did the "nylon teabag 
approach for a while, but I now prefer a less passive approach.
