I find Duckweed useful as well. It's a security blanket for some cichlids, shy at overhead movement, but happy under a layer of floating plants. It's eagerly gobbled up by Distichodus (headstanders), Thysochromis and other west african cichlids. It overgrows in some tanks and is a boon to others.
