Bill, Your quite correct about keeping mixed apisto species. Keep species from different complexes, otherwise they may cross-breed. A. panduro & A. nijsseni can be pretty rough on other species and a 30 gallon long tank can be controlled by a single pair if not aquascaped properly. If I were going to mix another species with these, I'd choose something that grows large like A. steindachneri, A. sp. Rotpunkt, or a macmasteri-group species.
