Re: Nile Virus and mosquito larvae
I have to believe that with all the standing water (mosquito factories) that
nature creates, a few hobbyists would have very little effect.
Statistically, the incremental increase in risk would doubtless be
insignificant, especially since most if not all of the larva are fed to
fish, and are not allowed to mature.
To the extent that no adults are created, 'mosquito farming' should actually
cause a slight decrease in natural production, since adults that would be
reproducing in the wild, and their larva ostensibly growing to maturity and
becoming a potential health menace, would instead breed in a situation where
none of the larva are allowed to mature. Admittedly, the statistical effect
is probably very insignificant.
I do realize that there are laws that should be observed. In any case, I
wouldn't spread the talk around the neighborhood that you're running a
mosquito farm in the back yard!
Best,
Scott

Coming from the Midwest, I eagerly feed mosquito larvae. But I know of one
aquarist in the East who is no longer going to harvest and feed them to his
fish
because of the Nile Virus that is speading through mosquitos. Perhaps the
hobby
needs an expert who can explain the risk.
