Tsuh Yang, Geophagus braziliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) is still a valid species, but not all fish in the hobby going by the name "G. braziliensis" is this fish. There are several braziliensis-like fish that belong to a species complex, as you said, like surinamensis. Weidner's book "South American Eartheaters" is an excellent information source on this group of fish.
