I agree, muriatic acid (industrial grade HCl) is the way to go. I used this on large blocks of limestone containing silicified fossils while working on my MSc thesis. It works like a charm. Just be sure to follow all of the warnings that come on the bottle - particularly using it in a well ventilated (preferably open) space. The vapors can destroy cotton and many synthetic fabrics in no time at all. I had a complete collection of 'holey' shirts by the end of my project. Inhaling the vapors isn't very pleasant either!
