Re: fish ID

Erick,

Römer first introduced this fish in German & then the US literature in 2000 as
A. sp. Brustband/Breast Band. He didn't mention any breeding info. In an article
on unusual behaviors in apistos, Koslowski in 2000 reported on its mouthbreeding
behavior, where he called it A. sp. Maulbrüter/Mouthbrooder, along with A. sp.
Putzer/Cleaner, an apisto that acts like a marine cleaner fish. Koslowski
reported that this species is a larvophilic mouthbrooding cichlid. It lays its
eggs in a cave in typical apisto fashion. When the eggs hatch the female puts
the larvae in her mouth and carries them with her. When feeding, she puts the
larvae in a secluded spot, eats and then picks up the larvae again. Once the
larvae become freeswimming fry the female tends them in typical apisto fashion,
never allowing them into mouth except when picking one or two up to bring them
back to the school. Egg production is low because the eggs are comparatively
large and the mouth hasn't developed an enlarged bucchal pouch. Koslowski
reports that the best production was ~35 fry from a spawn at pH 4.9 and
conductivity around 130 µS/cm. Smaller broods occurred at higher pH values. I
think you would get similar results with slightly higher pH values if the water
were a bit softer. Hope this helps.
