Re: testing DH water

Juergen,

THank you for your help,

I have a GH and KH test kit already so I will surely do that.

Are daphnia okay in phs as low as 5?

Coby,
I am still not convinced, absolutely not, that the water, the dehumidified
water
is safe for keeping and breeding fish.
If it's sounds to be too good/easy - it's probably not !
Water is very complex, not simply H20.

In a nutshell !

Technical Testing
It seems you tested it already for PH.
Put an air stone in the bucket for a day and test the PH again.
Check if the PH ends up below or above 7
Get a GH (General Hardness Test Kit)
Check for all the mineral contest.
For Apistos-I would not go higher then 8-9
Other people may think different :-)
Get a KH (Carbonate Hardness Test Kit )
This tells you the amount of Carbonates in the water,
in return it will be the determination factor for the PH !

Biologically Testing
Why waste the life of Fish.
Moral and Ethics are part of our hobby as well !
Get some Daphnia/Water fleas,
put them in a bucket/glass full of your dehumidified water,
check on them in a couple of days.
If they are dead-I was right :-)
If not - you should be O.K. and as a bonus
you have a nice live food culture for your apistos going.
BTW, this method of water testing with daphnia
is widely used by municipal water treatment plants.
