You want sphagnum peat moss. Sphagnum moss is how peat starts off
before it spends forever in a peat bog turning into peat; it is sold
dried and used by orchid/herp/craft people and I have tried it in
tanks... makes a slowly decomposing decent place for fry to hide, but it
does not do the beneficial stuff to the water that peat does.
