Re: Perverse fish!

The situation at present is thus; They've dug a hole gig enough for both to comfortably fit inside. There is still about 1 inch or so left of support at either side and lots of support left at the back, I had read of your experiences in the archives which is why I posted. I am very loathe to move anything or disturb them and will wait to see if they continue to dig. I don't have to work either for the rest of today or tomorrow and I'll be keeping a very close eye on them, if it looks like the slate is a bit precarious, I'll put some supports in.

The male paired off with a female & they started digging a cave under a piece of slate-like rock (fissile basalt). This digging seems to stimulate the breeding urge somehow. One day I went to check their tank & found the piece of rock had settled deeper in the sand. It didn't have any supports under it, other than the sand it was laying on. I couldn't find my male anywhere ... until I lifted the slab. There he was - crushed & dying. He had undermined the slab. I had the females for 3 more years & never

There was, by this stage only one male as the other one had been killed, so I moved these two into a breeding tank next to my computer in my office, which has given me plenty of opportunities to study their behaviour in more depth than I might normally do.

Well, instead of using the pots or cococnuts or whatever else, she's dug a hole under the piece of slate, it's quite wide and I don't think she'll dig too much and cause a cave-in but I don't want this to happen. The slate is about 6 inches wide by 4 inches deep and so far she's excavated about half the width of the slate (I don't know how far back sh'e gone but I suspect about an inch or so. I'm not keen on moving the slate as I don't want to disturb her, what do you guys think I should do?
