Hello ppm means parts per million and in that sort of gadget it probably measures TDS - Total Dissolved Solids. I read its a measurement of general hardness which relates with the more communly used DH. For the mainstream clearwater and blackwater creek apistos your readings should be not above 50mS conductivity or 20/30 ppm TDS. Since it is very rare to have this condicions from ones tap water, a reverse osmosis or dionization unit becomes almost compulsory. About the other issue I am in the some boat but applying the rule "when in doubt less fish is farther better than too much fish!". You should consider issues like inter and intra-specific agression, ideal water quality and room to expand. Its better to start your 64 project with, lets say, a group of 4 females one male agassizii and leave a lot of room open if an interesting species shows up on your LFS. If you started with the full crowd you will regret. Apart from that, there are some species that will be able to produce descendency that will eventually grow in the tank to become adults so you'd better think in advance if there will be room for them. About the species, it realy depends on your purposes. If you dont want to mess arround with RO/DI units you should choose species that adapt well to your kind of water (additives to correct parameters are not an option for me). Also avoid having different species from the same group or, even worse, the same complex because they will most certainly try to interbreed. You say you live in Europe where if I may ask. I live also in Europe, more precisely in Portugal and this is a very hard place to find apistos :-( Best regards Nuno Prazeres -----Mensagem original----- De: owner-apisto@v2.listbox.com em nome de Dániel Gergely Faragó Enviada: ter 02-12-2003 12:58 Para: apisto@v2.listbox.com Cc: Assunto: ppm Hello Everyone, I am quite new to the hobby, setting up my first net 64g tank right now. I aquired a gadget to measure PH, conductivity, and somthing measured in ppm. Well I now that ppm is part per million, but what is this good for? I'm planning to have more species in the tank. Originally I planned about 5-6 different pairs, but according to my readings this might be to much. So my question would be: How many species may I put in this tank of mine? And Shall it be a pair or a group from one genus? Actually my tank is not really for breeding purposes, as you see, but everything might happen, who knows... Thanks for the answers in advance.
