"While the Apistos of Rio Meta present a bewildering array of varieties, they can be differentiated by considering the placement of red coloration on the body. A. macmasteri displays red along the upper and lower edges of the caudal fin, *not* extending into the posterior margains of the fin, and a red streamer from the anterior soft dorsal. A. viejita, a smaller fish, belies her name, which means "little old woman." Color form 2 is a seductive, painted little hussy who has used her lipstick liberally. Red coloration in the caudal fin *does* extend to, usually throughout, the posterior margin." Hal has many more useful notes and observations in the article. - --------------------------------------------------------- Pete Johnson / San Jose, CA / petej@wordsanddeeds.com - ---------------------------------------------------------
