Robert,
Do you have any plants in the tank? If you don't, put some:
duckweed, water milfoil, water sprite, and other fast-growing plants.
They'll suck up the excess nutrients fast enough to outcompete
the algae. With kitty litter in the substrate, you'll have some iron
in the water which will be eaten by the algae.
Duckweed is probably your best competitor for green water.
