I use UGFs a lot. The biggest problem I have with plant growth is that the roots get entangled with the plate, making them hard, and even risky, to move. Apistos seem to prefer limited water movement in the tank, and the right UGF can provide that without a lot of problems. Also, upkeep is fairly cheap.
