I use UGFs a lot.  The biggest problem I have with plant growth is that the
roots get entangled with the plate, making them hard, and even risky, to move.

I personally like them.  Apistos seem to prefer limited water movement in the
tank, and the right UGF can provide that without a lot of problems.  Also,
upkeep is fairly cheap.  Just use one of the siphon things with the fat end to
clean the gravel during water changes.
