I am relatively new to the dwarf cichlid hobby, but I have to concur with some of what has already been said. D. filamentosous for the non apisto, due to tail, different body shape, and mild temperment. For the apisto I like A. cacatuoides and the pair of triple reds that I have show a lot of spunk, but I have to give A. agassizii the top honours. I bought a very young one about 10 months ago ($5 CDN) for an aunt of mine, when I came back to it recently it had blossomed into an absolutely BEAUTIFUL big male. When I asked my aunt how she had kept up the maintenance/feeding schedule I had set out for her when I had set up her tank it turned out that she had slacked off and fed flake (cheap stuff no less) exclusively and changed 20% of the water every 3-4 weeks in a full community tank !!!! You have to respect an apisto with that kind of fortitude !!!! There is a store here in north Toronto that has a group of wild caught A. agassizii Alenquers with at least a few females. Based on what was previously said in this group and my aunt's " super aggie " I will pick up a pair of these guys in the next few weeks.
