It is this easy. Aquarists have been doing this for years. Problems are
variable results, and just the mess.

You could always try the original "water softening pillow" too. Put a rock
in a pantyhose leg, fill it with peat, tie it off and throw in the tank for
a few weeks.

Activated charcoal removes the color, but quickly ruins the charcoal. So
plan to change it soon after the first pass.
