Some one on the rec.*.cichlids newsgroup mentioned that they buy the small pots designed for burning 'essential oils' from the local $2 shop - they come ready made with a hole in the side :) and are cheaper than terracotta. I haven't actually tried this myself - my rams are quite happy to lay on a flat piece of rock in the open :)
