Hi, Robert. There's a cichlid specialist shop in Scarborough about
1km south of the Kennedy subway station. The shop is called Aquarium
Discount, and the guy who owns it is Kelly (fishman@interlog.com).
Although he has a lot of larger and rift lake cichlids, he often has
locally bred apistos as well as locally bred rams that are the healthiest
and liveliest I've ever seen. I was out there yesterday, and he's a bit
low on stock but expects at least one of the local breeders to bring in
some rams and apistos in a week or two. He often has A.cacatuoides and
A.viejita. He is also quite willing to do special orders, and seems to
have access to a lot of unusual fish.

There's a small scale importer named Haydn Pounder in Missisauga who
ships worldwide (or at least to both the US and Canada). I don't have
his phone number handy, but you should be able to look it up. He often
has apistos and other unusual cichlids. He delivers to the meetings
of several of the local aquarium clubs. His prices are often really good,
and he will do trades, too, sometimes.

PJ's Pets at the Scarborough Town Centre often has apistos, many of which
come from Oliver Lucanus (Biotope ML), but their prices are usually incredibly
high.

I'd like to get a group of serious local aquarists together to do some
mail orders, or a local fish swap. Let me know if you are interested
(this is addressed to everyone in the Toronto area).

What I've heard from people who've done it, there are no real restrictions
on importing tropical freshwater fish that are not on a CITES list into
Canada. The thing that kills you, though, is shipping charges, which can
be really painful for small orders, hence my interest in pooled orders.

Do you have anything to trade right now? I've got a bunch of Anomalochromis
thomasi that should be breeding size in a couple of months, as well as some
rather nice common kribs (Pelvicachromis pulcher). You can have a pair of
kribs for free - I think I may have saturated the local market. :-)
