Thanks to everyone for a lot of good info in a very unselfish format. My water is very soft, but has alot of Ca++. I need to add Na bicarbonate on a daily basis. I change the water in my 125 (for example) twice weekly, but the pH although starting at 6.5 ends up at 5.5 to 4.5 depending on how long it's been since the last change or addition of bicarb (it got down to 4.2 when my discus spawned and i didn't want to disturb them. I have rotala macrandra (very nice red color), large amazon swords, java ferns, Hygro polysperma corymbosa, Heteranthera zosteraefolia, vallisneria (long and corkscrew), Sagittaria (dwarf), apons and java moss. I use VHO (360 watts), and gravel substrate. The temp is 81F because I keep discus in that tank. I don't think it's the pH, it must be the lighting or something else missing. Good luck.
