 Hi Kym,
I find the apisto hobby calls for incredible patience. If there's a
species you want, then you put out feelers for who has it, then within
two years you might get a pair. That pair will immediately die, so you
then  have to go back and get another. Then, you breed your fish, and
since they colour up slowly, the local stores don't want them. You then
have to be patient about finding them homes...
You can also get your aquaristic friends interested in the group, and
eventually, after enough questions, one of your local stores may import
some.
Or you can get get lucky like we did up in Quebec and have an importer
who loves apistos set up shop.
