In your 55 you could mix the rams with some kribs.   The only thing I
would recomend is that you set up the cave or flower pots for breeding
on both ends not any where near the middle.   I would keep the middle of
the tank open for only swimming and feeding.   This will cut down on the
aggression and mortality rate when spawning does begin.   That way both
species would have an area for themselves to raise their families.
