I can tell you what not to put in the filter. Carbon. It adsorbs the iron that the plants need. Have you set up a serious planted tank? As in, what is your light wattage, are you using CO2, etc? Your tank is not heavily loaded with fish and when you have lots of plants, they help to purify the water by absorbing nitrates and phosphates. So your filtration is not inadequate. I have a 120 set up with lots of plants, 3 watt/gal and CO2 injection. The filters are all canister type with ceramic noodles on the bottom, sponges in the middle and a bit of filter floss in the top. What kind of dwarfs do you have?
