I use sand or a mixture of sand and pea sized gravel mix in all my tanks. All species love it. A couple of folk I know use the sand you buy at an 'Early Learning Centre', the parents buy it for their children's sand pits, it is very cheap and inert. I have also tried the fine silica sand but thought it was just too fine, more like dust. I think sand gives the tank a natural look and causes no problems with any species.
