I use sand in all my tanks.I use a 1-1.5 in. layer I have found that it will keep the tank a little bit cleaner as the debris will not work its way into it like it will with gravel.The fish also sift it for food .Try sand with Pelvicachromis speices.They turn into quite the little landscapers.I think that sand is alot more natural than the gravel that most people use.Give it a try,I think that you will find that the fish and you will like it.
