Dissolved Organic Carbons are defined as the fraction of total organic
carbon (all carbon atoms covalently bonded in organic molecules) in water
that passes through a 0.45 micron pore-diameter filter. Total Organic Carbon
(TOC) is measured by the amount of carbon dioxide produced when a water
sample is atomized in a combustion chamber.
