Paul, Congratulations. All that algae would probably have helped while you were away- maybe you can grow some back. As for the hydra, I had a problem with them some time ago, and the pet store stuff just seemed to aggravate them. There's a veteranarian product called Panacur that will kill the hydra and not hurt the fry. It's used to treat parasitic worms in cats & dogs. Just sprinkle a very small amount on top of the water, and the hydra don't come back. I think I heard about the stuff on this list. Now your only problem is finding a vet that will sell you some.
