Vern, Yes, the original written introduction of this species, as A. sp. Aruã, was in German (Seidel, 1997, „Neue" Apistogramma-Art?, DATZ 50(4):213). The scientific description (Römer & Warzel, 1998, Apistogramma arua sp. n. (Teleostei: Perciformes: Cichlidae), a new species of dwarf cichlid from the Rio Arapiuns system, Para State, Brazil, Aqua, J. Ichthyol. & Aquat. Biol. 3(2):45-54 & 90) is in English. I have to hand it to Uwe, this is the most complete description of an apisto yet. Not only did he use (juvenile) specimens preserved in the wild, but saved some to grow out so we could recognize them in their adult form as well. This alleviates the problems of trying to ID aquarium fish based on juvenile type specimens (e.g.. A. sp. Rotkeil vs. A. uaupesi, and probably A. parva vs. A. agassizii). The time and effort to do this is highly commendable. It would be nice if all fish descriptions in the future were so complete. There are a couple of errors in the paper, but they have absolutely no bearing on the description of A. arua. His photo of "A. maciliensis" will be recognized by many as actually being one of A. sp. Mamoré (Red tail) & his photo of "A. juruensis" is actually A. sp. aff juruensis/Pucallpa. At the time of submission (1996 or 1997) these IDs were thought to be correct. It is amazing how quickly thing are changing in our understanding of this wonderful genus of fish! ASG members can get a copy of either of these articles (+ English translation of German article) from me.
