Re: Peat and Substrate for growout tanks

I have a feeling that the bio load was too much for the system- i.e. not enough surface area (sand)- I didn't seem to ever have any problems with similar fish loads when I was using sand- I was curious as to what other folks had experienced. The tank I had the problem in was a 20 gallon long with a Hagen sponge filter (like the tetra bili-filter, but with two sponges) for the filter system. The tank had 10 1.5 inch long young altispinosas in it who had not be fed a full diet for about a month (I was away on and off for work). The problems began when I stepped up their feeding to a more normal rate.

I agree with Helen, either your filter is not
mature or you have too much bio load for the
filter system you are using. Personally, I use
large sponge filters in small tanks. It works well
for me.
