Re: Nannochromis tranvestitus

Regarding the subject of a spinal deformities and breeding.

Please guys take it easy. There are people participating on this list who
have no formal education whatsoever in genetics. It's rather disconcerting
to read bold statements that a fish with a deformity must have acquired it
through genetics. That is definitely not necessarily the case. There are
several reasons why any particular fish may end up being deformed. A very
generalized differential diagnosis would include: genetics, poor quality
food and water, contagious disease, or an accident. Don't automatically
assume that an imperfect fish is not a candidate for breeding purposes. The
point is that if someone wants to use a fish like this to breed, then they
will discover for themselves if the condition is inherited. And if it is,
so what? Unless someones entire income and lifestyle is dependant on
whether a fish is going to produce normal offspring, then lets step back and
get things into perspective. We're not discussing million dollar Grade 1
race horses here and wondering if the 100,000 dollar stud fee is a good
investment.

If the fry are deformed, then (as gruesome as it is to me) they can be
consumed by appropriate predators. Don't try to convince me that the people
on this list who breed hundreds of apistos and other fish every year don't
do some form of culling.

Dave Gomberg has been around for quite some time and I don't consider his
advice to be something at which one should sneer. You really _can't_ trust
everything you read on the internet. Please don't pop any blood vessels. My
writing this _does not_ imply that Eric Olson's Krib is full of flaws etc.
Let calmer heads prevail.
