We've done very well (I think) over the last few years in communicating what we need at the meetings. I do not want to adopt something more formal. > Maybe > we should think about a policy that requires us to have discussion and then > vote at the next board meeting on items for thing like philanthropy. It's > cool that we have this list for discussion. I don't even think we have to have a policy for it. Every issue we've had in the past has always been brought up, given a bit of time for thinking, maybe even bringing up to the general membership, and then voted on later. It was just WEIRD with this one. I didn't understand the rush, and it felt wrong. Still kinda does. Personally, what I would move for on the next meeting is to recall the plan for SEAS as a *philanthropy* recipient, but re-instate the percentage of proceeds donation from the auction as gratitude for their support. Don't ask me why... same amount of money (see below), just feels wrong in one place but right in another. I would also hope that we didn't book Rosario LaCorte as a speaker without everyone being in agreement on the terms. I don't think Kathy would just run out and book a pair of plane tickets... there's going to be initial communication, finding out what he's comfortable with, times of year, program topics, etc. Ample time to steer things in a direction everybody on the board can be happy with. > If we were to donate 10% of the 2 auctions proceeds to the SEAS, then that > would be about $200 this year (i think). Actually, net between the two auctions is $2800, so $280, which is darn close to what was proposed in the Philanthropy project as well. > I thought that I was a good board meeting, huge attendance, and cool to see > a fishroom that was new to me. Yes, I was darn surprised at the good turnout. Maybe we should be having more board meetings at "new" places? Maybe Paul SKofield's next month? :) - Erik PS: In the big 9:15 escape rush, I didn't get a chance to really finish up on the "GSAS Documents" issue last night. I do think we really need to get these back. The alternative is that we will need to recreate the bylaws from scratch. I will try again to get ahold of Heather (we called her last known number, in Northgate, twice so far, but got no answer). Even if we do get ahold of her, there's no guarantee that the notebook still exists. I missed a flight to california last Friday, so ended up spending a good portion of the weekend consolidating all my aquarium society literature and GSAS material, so I can say that I have: * GSAS Newsletters from 1985-present (minus some stuff around 1990-1992) * Three issues of Northwest Aquaria (would be kind of cool to get the others for scanning... hmm... maybe Rich and Diane have copies and could lend them for a week) * Bank statements 1985 to end of Steve's treasury period (club's savings account was typically $1300 for most of this period) * Board and general meeting notes back to 1985 * Four FAAS-medalions. I tossed all the reams of FAAS-literature into the FAAS-cycling bin, but kept these. Thinking of putting felt on the bottom of them and making them into FAAS-coasters. This stuff all comes from my "secretary stuff", and Kathy's former "FAAS Stuff", plus a box of stuff Clay gave me a few years ago. What's missing are two notebooks comprising the "president stuff": really early history, the bylaws, revision to the bylaws, tax documents, and the like. - Erik -- Erik Olson erik at thekrib dot com
