Last night -February 21/04- I went to the Puget Sound Aquarium Society meeting to see Anthony Calfo holding a speech on coral propagation and corals compatibility. It was an excellent event, especially for those interested in this particular subjects, as well as for the average marine hobbyist. There were, probably, 150 people or more. The PSAS charged $20.00 admission at the door, for the non-members, and it was free for the club members. The $20.00 price will also pay the cost for a one year membership. There were a lot of new members -myself included. All of Anthony?s Calfo books (Reef Invertebrates -an essential guide to selection, care, and compatibility; and Book of Coral Propagation, reef gardening for aquarists) - were sold by PSAS club, at $35.00 a piece. There were a lot of books. I?ve been in contact with Anthony -via telephone and email- discussing about some reef invertebrates that I was interested in, and about keeping Nautilus Pompilius ( a project that I?ve done fore one of my clients). Last night, I talked to Anthony about our GSAS club, and he expressed his willingness to come and hold a speech for our club. When it comes to corals, he is a very knowledgeable person, and mixes his great expertise with some good, fine humor. Although we are predominantly freshwater aquarium club, I believe that he will be an excellent speaker for all of us and, I am pretty sure, some of our members will end up getting their hands soaked in salt water, after his presentation. The meeting took place at the Mercer Island Community Center. An excellent and inexpensive facility -$33.00/hour, large free parking lot, very safe and located quite central for most of us- but, unfortunately, they will close down this coming May or June, for about two years. To bad! It would?ve been a great place for our club meeting. Sandu |
