Bob,
Thanks for all the information
- this is very helpful, and now I have lots of good ideas to bounce off
my wife. If you could send the book on touring the NW to my home
address (2 Maple Valley Court, Madison, WI 53719) that would be
great. We love B&B's, so if you could get some info (or a
website) on your friend's place, I'll look into it. If this doesn't
work, would you recommend West Seattle as a good area for me to look for
other hotels?
I'll get my ticket within the
next few days and send you the details.
Thanks for your
help.

- Hi John
- About your airline ticket; what we normally do is have our guest
speakers buy their ticket and then reimburse them.
- Here's a few ideas on things to see and do around here:
- - Olympic Peninsula loop. Take ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge
Island & drive around via Port Angeles, Aberdeen, Olympia &
Tacoma. Beaches and mountains ( road to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic range
may be snowed in).
- - Mt. Rainier (if roads are open).
- -Mt. St. Helens interpretive center. They did a nice job on this.
- - Islands. Drive to Anacortes (80 miles) and take ferry from there to
the San Juans. Closer to home - Vashon and Bainbridge.
- - Victoria. You can take the tour boat from Seattle, the ferry from
Anacortes which goes through the San Juans, or drive north almost to
Vancouver and take the BC ferry from Tsawassen. If you plan on visiting
Canada bring your passports if you have them.
- - Seattle area: Museum of flight, Aquarium, Experience Music Project.
If you're in downtown Seattle in the evening stop in for a drink at the
Triple Door and check out their 1600 gal. freshwater tank. They open at
4:00.
- These are just a few ideas. There's lots more. Let me know what
you're interested in and I can mail you more info. Yesterday I picked up
a "freebie" book on touring the Northwest with you in mind
which I would be happy to mail to you.
- The hotel we have used in the past for our guest speakers just closed
its doors and I have no experience with any others around here. There is
a nice bed & breakfast here in West Seattle where I live. I know the
owner but I don't know what she charges. I can find out if you like. Easy
access to downtown, Pike Place Market etc.
- Hope to talk to you soon

- Bob,

- Sorry for the dealy in responding, but my kids have been sick
(stomach flu) and I'm just now getting back up to speed. Anyway,
I'll prepare two presentations for the 14th, a slightly longer and more
technical one on endangered Mexican livebearers and a slightly shorter
travelogue on collecting in the rainforests of Chiapas (extreme southern
Mexico). At this point, it looks like my wife will be coming with
me, and we will probably arrive on Sunday the 11th and return on Saturday
the 18th. Should I buy my airline ticket and then have you
reimburse me later?
-
- I'd appreciate any recommendations you might have on hotels and
points of interest. We hope to spend some time with city
attractions (Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, Space Needle, etc.), and
then maybe a day or two driving around the surrounding countryside
(Olympic Nat'l Park, Puget Sound islands, Mt. Ranier?). Any
recommendations? Any nice places that the average tourist might not
hear about? I was in Seattle for a few days about 9 years ago for a
conference, but it will be the first time for my wife. And being at
a conference, I only had a couple of half days to see the city, so my
experiences are pretty limited.
-
- Looking forward to my visit.

- Hi John
- If you could add an additional "travelog" presentation as
you have
- suggested to the Mexican livebearers presentation that would be
greatly
- appreciated. People are always interested in that sort of thing.
Something
- informal would be just fine. I asked around and found that there is
- definitely some club member interest in something like that.
- We meet on the campus of Seattle Pacific University, in a building
called
- Weter Hall. The SPU campus is fairly well signed and easy to get to.
We
- would probably meet you at a restaurant for dinner before the meeting
- anyway. There is a map and directions on our website
(www.gsas.org). I
- would be glad to mail you driving directions and maps if you like.
- There are lots of things to do in the Seattle/western Washington area
and
- we can help with any information on local sightseeing, etc.
