[GSAS-board] Club pharmacy?

Steev's lecture got me thinking... Some useful meds are available in large quantities at much better prices. Maybe we can find a way to get this savings to the members.

Erythromycin 200 mg tablets costs about $6.50 to $7.50 for 8 tablets at Petco. (roughly $0.80/tablet for Maracyn)

The same med is $3/8 at Big Al's, less than half the price... And in quantities of 1000, the price per tab is halved again!

So how about a club pharmacy? It could be useful for a few common meds with long shelf lives.

Example:

A jar of 1000 erythromycin tablets is $189 from Big Al's. The club buys the jar and splits it up among a few members who live in different areas. After all, when you need meds, you usually need them quickly. Members in need visit the "pharmacy" and pay club cost for the tablets, sending payment directly to the treasurer via PayPal. You could also buy meds at a meeting as insurance. At one quarter of the Petco price, I know I'd keep a stash of erythromycin around. (The shelf life of tablets is 2-3 years. You might be able to freeze it too, not sure about that yet.)

For people dosing a big tank, saving 75% over the LFS price could be very nice.

Just my latest harebrained idea!
