Re: [GSAS-board] Possible speakers

One should certainly check the budget before agreeing to have BOTH of them come, especially if we're able to get Oliver Lucanus next spring (which seems kinda likely -- Kathy has been in e-mail contact with him and addressing the other things he'd like to get out of a trip -- diving in the sound, seeing salmon swimming, etc). Maybe we can swing it, but the treasurer will need to work out the numbers. I know the club's done very well, budget-wise, the last year, between the monthly auctions and keeping speaker costs low. And as you say, we can also spread it out to next season too.

I e-mailed Eric to see if he even does the shrimp talk still.

In terms of double meeting topics, I would caution against that. Usually you end up with two mediocre talks instead of one excellent one. But perhaps as an alternative, we could do something we've done in the past (many years back): have the guest do a second, less formal, talk on another night at someone's house. In fact, with the photography topic, that might be very well suited to holding near a bunch of tanks. :)

Dear All,

After checking Mr. Ghori's web presence, I am in favor of having him come, if
he were to
address two topics:
1. Photographing the freshwater tank
2. Cryptocorynes

Freshwater shrimp are an additional cool topic re. Mr. Do -- can we aim to have
each of these
gentlemen come, over the next 18 months or so?

Cordially,

OK, so Luis highly recommended Ghazanfar Ghori to talk on Cryptocorynes --
he's become a major crypt geek, growing unusual species, growing them
emersed, etc.  Do you think there would be enough interest in GSAS to have
a guy flown out from the other Washington to talk about one genus of
plants for an hour?  What do you guys think?  Should we ask the general
      membership?

Another speaker that might be of interest is Eric Do, who spoke at the AGA
convention in 2006 on freshwater shrimp.  I think we actually put up part
of his video at the start of one of our meetings shortly afterwards.
Anyway, same question: Do you think there would be enough interest in GSAS
to have a guy flown out from California to talk on shrimps (rapidly
becoming the Koi of the planted tank hobby) for an hour?  If not, maybe we
just keep the video in reserve for a meeting where we don't have
      speakers.

Paul, you should come to Atlanta in November. :)
