Board: This is Rick's auction checklist to make sure we are prepared. The plant auction is much shorter without solicited donations but longer in that we need bags and hands for the FAN plants. So, Anything for the call for volunteers? Christine asked about the printer. I can bring 1 laptop and help bag. I think I will EASILY hit the 20 lot limit. -Paul On Wed, 21 Jan 2009, Steev Ward wrote:

Here are excerpts from documents from last year (and maybe other years).
You might read through these and see what information we should pass along
again this
year. The dates and places will be WRONG of course.

Plant Auction 08
from Paul:
http://lists.thekrib.com/gsas-announce/0801/msg00002.html
"The Greater Seattle Aquarium society is hosting our annual Plant and
Livestock
auction on Tuesday, February the 12th at our usual location, Weter Hall, SPU
campus.
Doors open at 6:30 to register items and the auction starting at 7:30. We'll
do our
best to try and explain a little about the plants (i.e., light requirements,
how
"challenging" it is, etc). Depending on the amount of donations, we might be
out by 9
like last year, or it might push on until 10:30.
If you're a member, you may bring up to 20 lots to sell of your own.
Members get
60% of the bid, while the club takes the remaining 40%. The board has decided
to
include FISH and other livestock this year, so feel free to bring your
juveniles! You
can also bring p lant-related dry-goods like substrate, fertilizer, CO2
gear, and
specialty lights, but no general stuff like tanks or filters. Save those for
April.
The success of our auctions depends on participation so please bring a
friend.
We are also looking for help the day of the auction with a need for WiFi
laptops,
baggers (before the auction), runners to distribute the goods, and
cleanup/break down
crew. If you think that you can assist with the above, please email me.
Unsure about whether the "plant" auction is for you? Plants of all types
will be
available from the super easy (duckweed) to stem plants (start quickly to
beat algae)
to rare species (ie any of the other mosses). If you keep herbivores, at
least plenty
of "green food" will be available.
What livestock should I bring? Any fish or invertebrate is welcome however
the
audience tends to be interested in planted tank friendly individuals.
Anything else? Plants can be bagged in Ziplock type bags and should remain
moist. Fish should be double bag ged to prevent leaks. Ie. seal "fish type"
bag #1
with a band, transfer to bag #2 band first, and seal."

No restriction on how many of each single species/thing (plants or

practice moderation (I don't think we'll need 20 lots of java moss for
instance).
You can always donate items. There is no item limit on donations.
Please spread the word to forums and other relevant mailing lists so

get a really good turnout.
Finally, we need volunteers:
Baggers at 6 PM to transfer the wholesale plants
into individual bags.
Computer ops to register people and bids
(6 PM to close)
Runners to move items from table to bidders

Backup computers. Do you have a laptop you
could bring?
A printer. Got one that's easily transported? USB,

The plant auction was originally conceived back in the days when decent
plants were really hard to get. The club would do a wholesale buy and
auction off the plants to the small group of members attending. During
the latter half of the 1990's, with the interest in planted tanks
exploding, we saw this auction grow accordingly, in some years even
approaching the level of our general auction. Folks from Portland
and Vancouver BC have occasionally travelled down to see and buy. We've
also seen some years where we've sold more member cuttings than wholesale
stock.
At any rate, here's what you can expect to happen on the 13th:

Next Tuesday is our annual Plant Auction! This is one of our two
fundraising events held each year, but more importantly is a chance for
YOU to buy and sell a variety of plants and plant-related items. For
those new to the auction: We are purchasing several hundred dollars of
wholesale aquatic plants and bogwood. Good stuff... it'll be arriving the
day of the auction, not sitting in a holding tank for weeks before. In
addition, members are bringing some of their own cuttings. We'll auction
it off, one piece at a time! As plants are auctioned, we'll give some
basic info about them as time warrants, but if you've got an ID book,
bring it. We don't know exactly what will be available, but we'll have
all ranges, from basics like Java Moss to (hopefully) some very unusual
species. The whole thing will go at breakneck pace before we collapse
sometime between 9:30 and 10.
Anyone (non-members included) can bid, but you must be a member to sell
and receive your 60% split. Sellers are limited to 20 lots each, and we
request sellers arrive at 6 PM to check in your items. No need to fill
out any forms -- we've got a barcode system for that -- but please label
all your bags with species or descriptions.
I beleive the auction starts at 7 PM, but again, that's on Rick's
announcement that I can't find right now. :)
We will also need some volunteers to be runners and computer-operators, as
well as folks to come early (5:30-6) and bag plants. If you can bring a
laptop of your own with a wireless LAN card, please reply to me
personally! Hopefully we'll have enough auctioneers...
See you there
- Erik

The Washington State Department of Agriculture prohibits certain invasive
aquatic

protect
our native plant communities and recreation lands from infestation by escaped
ornamentals. The attached list details which species and the text of our law. We
appreciate your cooperation in not offering any of these plants at your sale.
