Hmm, I missed this email from Roy.I was a little concerned about potential cichlid speakers for Jan/Mar/May, and well June wayne sort is a general talk but I think he uses a lot of cichlid pictures. Then again.....some years it just goes like this. There are lots of cichlid folks one year, disease another year, goldfish type things one year, plants...etc.
Whatever you guys want. I really don't mind. We see lots of speakers at the conferences we go to, and just really enjoy whatever turns up at the local club. Most of the time I can't make it with the kids and have to see it on video, or miss it. Also, I like it when I don't have to plan them all!!!! So plan away.
I will say the Shrimp talk was one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES. It was definitely a national convention quality. Loved it. I am so glad I got to be there. I love be inspired by talks and I was on that one.

Dang. I sent this before I saw this very articulate and on point email on the topic. I support what Roy says on this matter! That way the Home Show Presentation could be used any month we needed it. I agree the Home Show is great, but I don't think it can be stretched into a 1 1/2 hour program. Last June we did the Home Show in conjunction with the Horticulture Awards Program Presentation / Awards; Club Board / Committee Chair Elections; and the Ice Cream Social. I was doing some planning on the Home Show earlier last week. The 2010 Super Bowl is Sunday 2/7/10 and Valentine's Day is Sunday 2/14/10. The Home Show visits would have to be in January or the weekends of 2/20 - 2/21 or 2/27 - 2/28 in February. The March GSAS meeting is 3/9/2010 which doesn't leave a lot of time to assemble the pictures, do the voting and put together the video and presentation. As for talks, if we have Jen come down from Vancouver for a talk on cichlids in January, another talk by Jeff (our new member) on cichlids later in the spring seems excessive to me. I am glad we are discussing the spring agenda now; it gives us some time to work things out. We really don't have any chance to see each others tanks and appreciate what everyone is doing. I think this would be a great meeting topic all alone. It is really fun to see the details about what everyone is doing. Designs. Fish rooms. Etc.... What do you think of making that the whole meeting topic in March. After the presentation then open it up for everyone to talk?? Kathy -- Kathy "Perhaps wisdom is simply waiting, and healing a question of time. To be honest, I would rather do my Tanganyika presentation just because it's already all prepped, I've had a few chances to practice it so far, and I'm eager to share what I experienced with other keeners- I know if I weren't already me, I'd love to see this talk- it even has underwater video. My favourite is of cooperative hunting behaviour between mastacembelid eels and predatory cichlids! The other factor of course is time to make a new presentation- kind of lacking on that front right now, and with the holidays coming up, it's sure to get worse. Now, I could easily do a really short blurb about the Aquarium either before or after that- I think I can do a good job of talking the place up and I could bring down some pamphlets, possibly even raffle off some more admission passes/etc if I can get my paws on some... I'll be more than happy to pass this along to Those Who Decide on our board, and personally I would love to hear more about cichlids - we had Lawrence Kent do an utterly amazing talk on his West African adventures int he spring, and I even won some of the fish he hand-carried back on the plane. Yeah, I know!!! :-) However, I have a feeling we might be a tiny bit cichlid-ed out, as the question arose at our board meet on Tuesday that someone might want to come down and discuss the Vanc Aquarium and what you do there/why it's an awesome aquarium to visit. I thought it was particularly cool that we got to visit an aquarium in a country that borders a vast portion of the Arctic, not a perspective we often get down here :-) Maybe combine the two somehow? Like I said, this evening I'll pass this along and we'll see what we can do! THanks so much! - Phil Jennifer Reynolds writes: Hi Phil, Dave passed on a message to me that you are looking for speakers for January. I've done a talk on my cichlid work in Lake Tanganyika last year a few times now that has been pretty well received. It's especially good for cichlid geeks, but I also include some stuff for travellers, catfish and eel folks, and scuba divers- lots of underwater photography in it, too. Attached is a little blurb/poster type thing with a couple of images and a write up about my work. Let me know if you're interested- would be a good opportunity for me to come down to Seattle. I also know there are lots of folks in the Seattle club who are way more into Africans than there are here- so it would be awesome to talk to them about it. I saw Ad Koning's talk on Lake Malawi down in Seattle about 5-6 years ago or so. The only potential issue is I may be going to Brazil in late January for some work with the World Fisheries Trust and a new aquarium in Belo Horizonte. That hasn't yet been confirmed, however- and the dates were definitely leaning more toward the end of the month. I *think* it is a safe bet that I can do Jan 12, but just wanted to let you know that there could be complications. Let me know what you think! Cheers, and thanks again for your terrific auctioneering.
